A PON (passive optical network) is a network system that carries optical fiber cabling and signals from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to the end-user to deliver broadband Internet access. A PON system can end (terminate) at multiple locations: a subscriber's home, an office building, or at a curb or a shared point within a neighborhood. OTDRs are used to troubleshoot a point-to-point FTTx system, but a point-to-multiport network (i.e. PON network) is more complex and requires a special PON OTDR.
